When I returned to Austin for my second visit, There were two places I had to return to, The Salt Lick Bar-B-Que and Rudy’s Bar-B-Q. In Texas, it seems that everyone spells barbecue differently. Rudy’s is a chain that started life near San Antonio, Texas and now has multiple locations in Texas and other southwest states.
The atmosphere is a tongue-in-cheek cafeteria attached to a “country store” and a gas station. Yes, you read it right, a gas station; you can fill up your gas tank and stomach at the same place! The barbecue is great; rubbed with their dry rub spices and smoked with oak. The meat is all sold by weight, so you can try different kinds; they even threw is some extras stuff that we didn’t order! The meat is presented dry and you have the choice of adding a little of the sauce or smothering it.
Next time you need gas in Austin, make sure you fill up at Rudy’s!
